From The Desk of Mrs. Herrington

 

 

I will be your child’s reading teacher for the 2006-2007 school term.  It is my sincere desire that your child will be excited about reading.  In order for each student to be confident and well prepared for his/her lifelong journey of reading, I recommend that they Read! Read! Read!  The City of Memphis library has Jungle Tales: Hiss, Rumble, & Roar Tennessee Summer Reading Program 2006.  I  recommend that you stop by your local library for more details on participating in this program.  Extra points will be given to each student who participates.

  Requirements for extra points:

 ~ The student must bring to class the book log form that the library provides.

 ~ The librarian must initial the book entry and local library branch entry.

   

 Each grade has a MANDATORY book to be read, along with a book report. The report is due on Tuesday, August 15, 2006.  Your child is required to read the following book:

  1st grade:  Junie B., First Grader Toothless Wonder by Barbara Park  

2nd grade:  Junie B., First Grader Boss of Lunch by Barbara Park  

3rd grade:  The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor  

4th grade:  Road to Memphis by Mildred D. Taylor 

5th grade:  Let the Circle Be Unbroken by Mildred D. Taylor  

6th grade:  Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor 

   

Book Report Requirements: 

*The book report must be in book form

*In a decorated folder

*Handwritten legibly without excessive eraser markings.

*Students in grade third-sixth are required to write in cursive and

in black ink only!  Must be written legibly.

* MESSY PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!!!

The book report must include an introduction page, body page, and conclusion page. 

The book report format:                  

                       I.         Introduction Page:

                                    Title

                                    Author

                                    Type of book  (i.e. fiction, non-fiction, etc.)

            II.                Body Page: main parts of the story

WHO: The Characters (Who is the story about?  The main character and the other important people in the story.)

WHAT: The Theme (main idea what the story was about)

WHEN & WHERE: The Setting (Time and place i.e. school or home, day or night, city or country etc.)

WHY & HOW: The Plot (What happens in the story? What the story was mostly about? The main event or conflict and what lead up to it? What happens as a result? How does the story end?)

            III.              Conclusion: a brief summary of the story in your opinion.

~ Did you like the story?

~ What was the best part of the book?

~ How did the story make you feel?

~ Would you recommend this book to a friend?

~ Would you read other books by this author?

~ What new thing or idea did you learn from this book?
